Weekend on the Rock, February 20-22, 2015: FarmStrong and Chilly Hilly

Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of February 20-22, 2015:

1. Rye and Barley at Bainbridge Brewery
When: Friday, 4-7 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Island Brewery, 9415 Coppertop Loop
Why: It’s a mishmash of cultures on February 20, which happens to be National Cherry Pie Day. You won’t get any of that, but you can enjoy Irish music, Hebrew National Kosher hot dogs from Dog Wagon, and a Baltic style Porter on tap. Dogs welcome.

2. FarmStrong Band at BIMA
When: Friday, 7-9 p.m.
Where: BIMA, 550 Winslow Way East
Why: To promote the upcoming Bainbridge Bluegrass Festival, FarmStrong, the real deal, will be plucking strings at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.

3. Library U: Great Decisions—Sectarianism in the Middle East
When: Saturday, 9:30-11 a.m.
Where: Bethany Lutheran Church, 7968 Finch Road
Why: Kelly Erickson, Visiting Assistant Professor of International Politics and Government at the University of Puget Sound, moderates this discussion about the politicization of ethnic and religious identity in the Middle East. Here’s your advance reading.

4. Author Stephanie Coontz on Gender Equality
When: Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
Where: Kitsap Conference Center, 100 Washington Ave., Bremerton
Why: The League of Women Voters of Kitsap has invited Coontz, a nationally known lecturer to present “A 50-Year Perspective on Gender Equality: How Far Have We Come? Where Do We Need to Go Next?” Enjoy a seared Columbia River Steelhead brunch (vegetarian and vegan choices included) as you ponder the past and future of the genders.

5. Showcase of Island Treasure Award Winners
When: Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Where: BIMA, 550 Winslow Way E.
Why: Since 2000, 32 awards have been presented to Island Treasures. See an exhibit honoring them all in this two-day showcase.

6. Bainbridge High School All Class Reunion Meeting
When: Saturday, 10-11:30 a.m.
Where: Bainbridge High School Library, High School Road
Why: Be part of the monthly organizing committee working on promoting the big event at Kiana Lodge on August 8. Bainbridge High School classes between 1927 and 1980 are invited.

7. Weed Warriors
When: Saturday, 1-3 p.m.
Where: Fay Bainbridge
Why: Join the warriors as they heroically fight the never-ending battle against the spread of noxious weeds and nonnative invaders.

8. Eleven Winery Features Animals of Grace
When: Saturday, 1-4 p.m.
Where: Eleven Winery, 7671 NE Day Road
Why: Animals of Grace is Erika Lundahl and Doug Indrick, based out of Columbia City, Seattle. No idea what that name means. The Winery is open from 12-5 for tours and tastings.

9. The King and the Baby Award Ceremony
When: Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
Where: Mesa Gallery, BIMA, 550 Winslow ay E.
Why: The what the what, you say? Well, so artist Julie Paschkis , created an illustration called The King and the Baby, and as part of Bainbridge Island Museum of Art’s Children’s Book Illustrators 1: Points of Entry exhibition, visitors were invited to write a story to accompany it, with the illustration as the prize. Silverdale 11 year old Izzy Bolon was selected from 100 entries as the Grand Prize winner. Paschkis will be on hand to award Bolon with the painting.

10. Kids Night at the Museum
When: Saturday, 5:30-9 p.m.
Where: Kids Discovery Museum, 301 Ravine Lane NE
Why: Your kids will ring in the Chinese New Year with themed activities while you and your date can go do whatever you want. Activities are recommended for ages 3.5 to 9. Participants must be able to use the bathroom independently.

Registration is required by noon on Friday. $30 per child for members and $40 per child for Nonmembers. $10 off per sibling. Register at (206) 855-4650 or www.kidimu.org.

11. Chilly Hilly
When: Sunday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where: Everywhere
Why: It’s back! Thousands of cyclists will take over the Island.

12. Growing Up Safe & Prepared
When: Sunday, 11-11:30 a.m.
Where: Kids Discovery Museum, 301 Ravine Lane NE
Why: BIPD Officer Erik Peffer patrols KiDiMu’s “Our Town” exhibit. Kids can learn about Officer Peffer’s work and check out his gear up-close. Does Our Town have a car prowler too?

Free with admission or membership.

When: Sunday, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Where: Eagle Harbor Book Co., 157 Winslow Way E.
Why: Check this out: In 1810, John Jacob Astor sent out two expeditions to settle the wild, unclaimed western coast of North America, one by land and one by sea. More than half of his men died violent deaths. Guess where the survivors ended up? Stark’s book features their firsthand accounts. Good times.
